Leading Schools 2009
What exactly defines a ‘Leading School?
The term 'leading school' is commonly used within the independent sector. This website explores the true meaning behind this terminology and asks these schools to justify, in their own words, why they consider themselves to be leading in their field. An independent education is not solely about a schools position on the league tables, but about providing a rounded education tailored to the needs of each individual child.
Each of the ‘leading schools’ has a dedicated entry, where you will find a plethora of information including an image gallery, and contact details. Each school also provides a short explanation as to why they believe themselves to be a ‘leading school’. This allows prospective parents to gain a ‘true flavour’ of each school in terms of ethos, facilities and academic record.
No school can do equally well for all children; a child may thrive in some schools and struggle in others. LeadingSchools.co.uk is all about highlighting the benefits of each of these leading schools in order to assist parents in their school selection process.
Cheltenham College
"We believe we are a leading school because we encourage all our pupils to be part of a lively and flourishing community within which they develop socially as well as academically. We take pride in ensuring our pupils go on to university as self confident, mature and accomplished young people who have the character and ability to make valuable contributions to society."
Worth School
"We believe we’re a leading school because as a Benedictine school we encourage our pupils to develop their own individuality whilst living within a community that inspires learning, worship, friendship and service; Worth is known for its strong communityvalues, high academic standards, friendly atmosphere and the excellence of its all-round education."
Bedales School
"We believe we are a leading school because we develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning who cherish independent thought. Bedales' founder, John Badley, believed that involving "head, hand and heart" was the key to growth and development. This is still the cornerstone around which our innovative education system is built. Relationships are important at Bedales; students and staff shake hands after assembly as a way of formalising mutual respect, which, along with co-operation, trust and tolerance, knit our community together."
Bradfield College
"We believe we are a leading school because Bradfield College is now acknowledged as one of the leading all-round coeducational boarding schools in the country: this reputation principally stems from the extremely high standard of pastoral care at the College, but also the way Bradfield families benefit from the "double whammy" of an excellent academic education AND the broader vision of holistic development created by the well-rounded, extra-curricular activities. And all of this in the setting of an un-spoilt Berkshire village!"
Cumnor House School
"We believe we are a leading school because you could read about how good we are; you could talk to any past or present pupil or parent; but we think you should come and see for yourself. Outstanding is as outstanding does."
Windlesham House School
"'We believe we are a leading school because we give every child the opportunity to reach their potential in whatever sphere of life that might be - boys and girls at Windlesham flourish in their own way, building confidence and forging friendships for life."
Westbourne House School
"'We believe we are a leading school because the personal development of our pupils is outstanding (ISI), visitors always comment on the family atmosphere and warmth of relationships, results at Scholarship and Common Entrance are outstanding and our facilities are amongst the best of any Prep School internationally."
Stonyhurst College
"We believe we are a leading Catholic school because throughout our 400 year history we have always aspired to treat our pupils as individuals, academically, spiritually and emotionally, in keeping with our Jesuit tradition; as a result our young men and women leave us equipped to think for themselves and provide leadership in the contemporary world."
